Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of the training is to provide trainees with the necessary knowledge, specific skills and applied competencies such that they will meet the requirements for sub-specialisation in paediatric pulmonology of the College of Medicine of South Africa. In addition to diagnosis and management of children with complex paediatric pulmonology conditions the graduate would be expected to have developed skills to be able to:

  • Undertake research in paediatric pulmonology.
  • Develop and implement evidence based management protocols.
  • Manage pulmonology services.
  • Undertake and interpret procedures and investigations relevant to paediatric pulmonology.

Rationale

The training programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a registered subspecialist in Paediatric Pulmonology.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall not be admitted to the programme, unless he/she (a) submits proof that he/she, prior to commencing with education and training in the relevant subspecialty, has complied with all the requirements for registration as a specialist in the primary or one of the primary specialities listed against the relevant subspecialty; (b) has been registered as a specialist in that field; and (c) has been appointed against an Health Professions Council of South Africa.(HPCSA)-approved training number.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at Level 9.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Built a sound knowledge base via reading, bedside teaching, tutorials, discussions and Meetings.
  2. Develop solid clinical grounding in paediatric pulmonology through practical experience.
  3. Master the requisite procedural skills and interpretation of special investigations, including lung function testing and flexible bronchoscopy.
  4. Develop a highly effective communication skill set and understanding of ethics as it applies to paediatric pulmonology.
  5. Develop an understanding of clinical research issues and the ability to critically read and understand the literature.

Associated assessment criteria

Integrated Assessment

The examination consists of two parts. The examination in Part I consists of one or more written paper(s) and/or such practical and/or oral examinations as the examiners may require. The examination in Part 2 (for those candidates who wish to obtain the degree) consists of a dissertation.
