Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of the training is to equip the candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage all aspects of paediatric infectious diseases. The curriculum includes general principles of Paediatric Infectious diseases (PID), advanced training in paediatric human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis, infection control practice, antimicrobial policy and practice, clinical immunology.

Microbiology and virology laboratory practice, parasitology and vaccinology. Training includes competency in outbreak investigation, basic epidemiology, bio-statistical and research skills, and outreach and support to Level 1 and 2 clinics.

Rationale

The training programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a registered subspecialist in Paediatric Infectious Diseases.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall not be admitted to the programme, unless he/she (a) submits proof that he/she, prior to commencing with education and training in the relevant subspecialty, has complied with all the requirements for registration as a specialist in the primary or one of the primary specialities listed against the relevant subspecialty; (b) has been registered as a specialist in that field; and (c) has been appointed against a Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)-approved training number.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at Level 9.

Modules

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Paediatric Infectious Diseases Part 1 (PED7033W), 120 Credits.
  • MPhil in Paediatric Infectious Diseases Part 2 (PED7034W), 60 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. At the end of the training period the graduate should have a sound clinical grounding in Paediatric Infectious diseases (PID) be able to manage advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis problems including the management of drug-resistant disease, be able to interpret immunological test results and manage children with primary immunodeficiency diseases, have an sound knowledge of antimicrobial therapies, be able to investigate ID outbreaks, antimicrobial therapies, be able to investigate ID outbreaks, should have gained some publishing experience, completed the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) exit ID subspecialist examination successfully and completed a dissertation demonstrating competency in research methodology.

Integrated Assessment

The examination consists of two parts. The examination in Part I consists of one or more written paper(s) and/or such practical and/or oral examinations as the examiners may require. The examination in Part 2 (for those candidates who wish to obtain the degree) consists of a dissertation.
