Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The graduate in Paediatric Endocrinology will be capable of providing comprehensive care to children and adolescents with endocrine disorders, metabolic diseases and diabetes mellitus. The training will equip the candidates with the skills and knowledge to cope with all aspects of clinical care as defined by a curriculum available in the Unit (guidelines also available on the website of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA)). In addition, trainees would be expected to have logbook/portfolio of clinical cases, acquire skills in research methodology, undertake research in the field, provide teaching of medical and nursing personnel, develop treatment protocols and manage a paediatric endocrine service.

Rationale

The training programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a registered subspecialist in Paediatric Endocrinology.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall not be admitted to the programme, unless he/she (a) submits proof that he/she, prior to commencing with education and training in the relevant subspecialty, has complied with all the requirements for registration as a specialist in the primary or one of the primary specialities listed against the relevant subspecialty; (b) has been registered as a specialist in that field; and (c) has been appointed against an Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)-approved training number.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at Level 9.

Modules

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Paediatric Endocrinology Part 1 (PED7023W), 120 Credits.
  • MPhil in Paediatric Endocrinology Part 2 (PED7024W), 60 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. On completion of the 2 year training period the graduate will have acquired sound knowledge via recommended reading, development of a detailed portfolio of cases, bedside teaching, combined endocrine teaching rounds, presentations at endocrine meetings and journal clubs, acquired clinical skills in endocrinology through practical experience in clinics and wards, developed problem solving skills by the interpretation of stimulation tests and radiological aspects of endocrine disorders, developed research skills by completing research projects, acquired effective communication skills.

This will enable the graduate to function as a sub-specialist.

Associated assessment criteria

Integrated Assessment

The examination consists of two parts. The examination in Part I consists of one or more written paper(s) and/or such practical and/or oral examinations as the examiners may require. The examination in Part 2 (for those candidates who wish to obtain the degree) consists of a dissertation.
