Purpose and rationale

Purpose

It is intended that the learner enrolling for this Master's Degree will be prepared for a career as a Clinical Endocrinologist. The learner will be supervised, guided and assisted by properly qualified individuals and will be required to perform a research project at the appropriate level.

Learners enrolling for this qualification will

  • Acquire a high level of theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills and experience in the field of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, via appropriate assimilation and analysis of new information, the ability to find workable solutions to problems and challenges, and practical application of knowledge accrued.
  • Acquire the necessary skills to:

> Identify key research opportunities, initiate well structured research studies and complete such studies.

> Apply the results thereof.

> Promote an approach based on academic integrity and professional ethics.

> Move into a higher level of academic research work for Doctoral Studies.

On successful completion of the qualification the learner will be able to contribute to a pool of academics and professionals with the competence and critical intellectual abilities to ensure advancement in the field of Endocrinology and to make provision for the country's needs in a skilled scientific workforce of the highest calibre.

Rationale

The world-wide pandemic of endocrine-metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity has made appropriate training and research in this field a priority. South Africa is no exception and the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and lipid disorders has now reached staggering proportions, especially among our Black, Mixed Race and Indian population groups. Not only is more patient care required, but more clinical research on epidemiology, clinical manifestations, risk factors, prevention and appropriate management has become mandatory.

This qualification aims to address the need for properly trained clinicians, with a thorough understanding of and experience in clinical research in the field of endocrine-metabolic medicine. As in all the subspecialty programmes in Medicine, learners entering this qualification will be qualified physicians who have obtained their Master of Medicine Degree and possibly hold a Fellowship with the South African College of Physicians.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Master of Philosophy in Endocrinology conforms to the institution's Policy for the Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) as well as the ARPL policy of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The policy defines the process that must be followed in the assessment of an application for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at Postgraduate level and provides information pertaining to assessment tools that can be used in the assessment of RPL applications.

Entry Requirements

The entry-level qualification is an Honours or equivalent Degree in the chosen or a related field/discipline specialist Degree in Medicine. The applicant must also be currently registered with the relevant Professional Board as a specialist physician.

For admission to the Master of Philosophy in Endocrinology, the learner must hold a Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa [FCP (SA)] or equivalent Degree.

Vertical Articulation

This qualification articulates vertically with a cognate Doctorate in Endocrinology at NQF Level 10.

International comparability

The following qualifications were interrogated for comparison.

Master of Philosophy in Obesity and Endocrinology - University of Liverpool, United Kingdom (UK)

An Honours first Degree in an appropriate science subject is required as a minimum for entrance into this Master's Degree, which preferably, will be relevant to the area of interest. Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications are evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.

Techniques include

  • Functional neuroimaging of appetite control in endocrine disease in collaboration with MARIARC.
  • Real time measurement of appetite and studies of liver and muscle metabolism, including euglycaemic clamp studies, in obesity, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • The group also conducts clinical trials and has close links with a number of research groups in Africa.
  • In veterinary practice and research there are parallel interests in obesity and metabolic disease in companion animals, horses and cattle and basic research models of human disease.
  • Pre-clinical research focuses on adipocyte biology, with particular interests in the endocrine products of adipose tissue, and has close links with the clinical groups.

The key principle behind the research is the recognition over the last decade that to elucidate cell, organ or organismal function in health and disease requires an integrated approach utilising the best available cutting-edge technologies.

Master of Science in Endocrinology - University of South Wales, UK

Delivered online, the MSc in Endocrinology is practical and clinically focused. Course content and structure are designed to create professionals with greater confidence and understanding of the management of patients with endocrine disorders, through case studies and discussion.

Learners will develop the skills to access information independently and use it to critically to assess, evaluate and disseminate evidence that is related to endocrine care. Learners are helped to develop creative, problem-solving approaches to complex clinical situations, and become an important advocate in the delivery of care to people with endocrinology-related problems.

This is a part-time, distance-learning course and is preceded by the Postgraduate Diploma in Endocrinology. The Diploma runs over one year and comprises six modules with each module taking six weeks to complete. Two additional modules which run over nine months can be taken consecutively or following a break to complete the MSc in Endocrinology.

At the start of the course, learners are encouraged to attend two days of introductory lectures, where they will be introduced to module content and the online learning environment.

For the remainder of the course, learners are split into groups of 10-15 members. Each group is supervised by a lecturer, who will also facilitate, monitor and assess each learner throughout the duration of the module.

Learners will be assessed across the following components of each module

  • Clinical case scenarios, with case-based discussion.
  • Individual learning portfolio.
  • Group/individual activity.
  • Case-based examination.

Conclusion

Given the outline of the two UK Masters' Degrees in Endocrinology and that this Master of Philosophy in Endocrinology meets the required research component, theoretical knowledge and practical skills, this qualification complies with international practice in terms of the requirements for a Master's Degree.
