Purpose and rationale

The aim of the MMus is to produce highly qualified researchers and scholars, performers or composers who can use their skills and knowledge to contribute to the national and international advancement of music.

Successful graduates will be capable researchers, performers or composers who will be able to continue with further postgraduate study.

Entry requirements and RPL

Candidates should be in possession of a Bachelor of Music degree or an Honours degree in an appropriate discipline in order to qualify for admission to the degree.

Recognition of prior learning

Persons who are able to give satisfactory evidence of their qualifications (formal or informal) may be specially exempted from the normal entrance requirements for the degree and may register as Ad Eundem Gradum students.

Exit level outcomes

  1. The MMus graduate is competent to apply specialist knowledge and advanced research techniques to solve problems and answer questions.

Associated assessment criteria

Research degree

The candidate should provide evidence of a high level of competency in a specialised field. Where the degree is research based, the candidate will provide evidence of the ability to undertake all aspects of research. This will include the preparation of a research proposal and the writing of a thesis which shows that the candidate:

  • Is sufficiently acquainted with the appropriate methods and techniques of research;
  • Is sufficiently acquainted with the relevant literature;
  • Has both satisfactorily understood the nature of the problem or topic and assessed the significance of the findings;
  • Has satisfactorily presented the results of independent research for the award of the degree in a manner, which is satisfactory as to literary style and presentation, and free from grammatical and typographical errors;
  • When the degree is awarded with distinction the candidate must have produced evidence of real methodological and conceptual skills, clarity of exposition and development of argument, sound judgement, originality of approach, and some contribution to knowledge.

Degree by composition

The candidate must satisfactorily prepare a set of original compositions and submit an explanatory statement referring to any important aspects of the scores, including in particular a description of the form or forms employed and of any contrapuntal, harmonic and orchestrational devices used.

Degree by performance

The candidate must demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge of interpretation and repertoire to a high standard of performance.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

The candidate should provide evidence of a specialised and high level of competence and knowledge.

Formative assessment is provided by the supervisor and other University staff members on written and oral research reports. Summative assessment is provided on the basis of a thesis, set of compositions or performance.

Progression and comparability

Articulation options

  1. Learners with an Honours degree from another university may be able to register for a Masters degree at Rhodes University.
  2. Learners with an MMus from Rhodes may be able to move to any other university in the country to undertake further postgraduate training.
  3. Learners with an MMus may be able to continue with a PhD, or they may be able to undertake other postgraduate training.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
