Purpose and rationale

To produce specialist Urologists capable of functioning clinically independently to an acceptable standard in all aspects of the speciality and with a particular mastery of the diagnosis and treatment of such Urological conditions, as frequently occur in Africa.

The qualification leads to the final examination for the fellowship of the College of Urologists of South Africa (credits are given towards the qualification of the College examinations which have been passed) and thereafter, the qualification, if a satisfactory dissertation is produced by the learner.

A clinical and or laboratory research project is undertaken by learners who opt to do a Part III: dissertation. The MMed Degree is awarded only if the dissertation is undertaken successfully.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.

In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, NQF Level 8.
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.

Integrated Assessment

Certification by Head of Department of four years of satisfactory service as Registrar. "Satisfactory service" implying adequate clinical skills, operative ability and good interaction with patients and staff. Final examination of College of Urologists of South Africa:

Written

  • 2 three-hour papers.
  • 2 hours clinical examination.
  • 1 hour oral examination.

Evaluation of dissertation: Learning the principles of clinical audit and outcome-based medical practice, and applying these to his or her daily clinical work.
