Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The main purpose of introducing Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery (MMed in Orthopaedics) is to orient and facilitate the learners to engage in relevant research so as to develop and improve innovative ways of management of Muscular Skeletal Condition in Orthopaedics. Learners have to be involved in research on a particular topic, which is relevant to the community improvement in terms of managing muscular skeleton condition. They have to design a research protocol, collect data to prove the aim and objectives and prepare a mini-thesis.
Rationale
In 2011, Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) made the compulsory requirement to have a Master' of Medicine (MMed) in Orthopaedics with a research component for registration as a Specialist Orthopaedics after completion of Fellowship in Orthopaedics from the College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). The HPCSA regulates and monitors the contents of the qualification for the training requirement for the learners who wish to complete the fellowship of CMSA to specialise in Orthopaedics and complete the MMed simultaneously.
Learners are required to have a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) along with completion of two years of internship training and one year of community service to join the Fellowship in Orthopaedics in accredited facilities like in Teaching Hospitals for practical and theory-based training for minimum of four years. On completion of MMed qualification, one becomes a specialist Orthopaedics with better knowledge and understanding of Orthopaedics and to deliver in the community.
