Purpose and rationale
To train competent neurosurgeons for both the academic, public and private sector needs of South Africa.
To encourage an ethos of honest enquiry to advance the understanding of neurological disease worldwide, but with specific reference to Southern Africa.
This qualification together with the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa Fellowship examination forms part of the credentialing process for specialist neurosurgical practice in South Africa.
Entry requirements and RPL
Entry Requirement
MBChB or equivalent acceptable to the Health Professions Council of South Africa Current registration as a medical practitioner (internship + 1 year community service).
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

b) 1. A sound knowledge of basic science, but particularly the neurosciences including neuro-anatomy, physiology and pathology.
- Knowledge of the general principles of surgery and intensive care unit management.
- Proficient general clinical skills, but specifically the examination of the nervous system.
- The ability to interpret adequately specific neurological testing including plain x-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and electromyographic recording.
- Proficiency in all commonly performed neurosurgical operations. This must include a logbook of procedures performed for validation by the Head of the Department.
- An understanding of clinical research methods and the publication of at least one peer reviewed clinical research paper.
Integrated Assessment
- Certification by the Head of Department that the candidate has completed at least 4 years of specific neurosurgery training in an academic unit and a further 18 months in general surgical or non-neurosurgical clinical activity.
- An accompanying logbook of procedures performed and assisted.
- An assessment by the consultant staff and Head of department of the surgical competence of the candidate.
- Passing of the following examinations are mandatory:
- Part 1A of the College of Neurosurgeons. A multiple-choice paper in anatomy, physiology and pathology, and a separate 3-hour paper in neuro-anatomy.
- Part 1B. General surgical principles which includes two 3-hour written papers and an oral if required.
- Part II final Fellowship examination. Three written 3-hour papers in basic science and clinical neurosurgery.
- A clinical bedside examination.
- An oral examination in all aspects of neurosurgery.
- A thesis written in conjunction with the Fellowship examination which will require a dissertation on a neurosurgical topic, and examination by 2 examiners of which one will be external.
