Entry Requirement

The learner will be capable of

  • Performing the full spectrum of forensic medical investigations encountered in medicolegal practice.
  • Administer a medico legal laboratory.
  • Act as a medico legal expert on behalf of the Department of Justice and other state bodies requiring forensic expertise.
  • Teach forensic medicine at both undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
  • Undertake basic research in the field of forensic medicine.

The learner will be able to

  • Competently examine, evaluate and report on the abnormalities observed at autopsy.
  • Testify authoritatively in court as experts on all aspects of traumatology.
  • Advise other parties on various legal and ethical matters of medico legal relevance.
  • Organise an efficient and cost effective forensic laboratory service.
  • Interpret the pathophysiology of human injury and its sequel.
  • Perform detailed dissections of cadavers.
  • Microscopically examine and interpret tissue sections.
  • Demonstrate basic laboratory management skills.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of their legal and ethical responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate impartiality at all times.

Associated assessment criteria

Learners will demonstrate their knowledge and skills in accordance with standards laid down by the institution and Professional Board through:

  • Clinical performance.
  • Written, oral, practical/clinical examinations.
  • Research report.

Competence is achieved, through continuous assessment by demonstrating the ability to achieve the outcomes of the qualification.

Before the M. Med. Degree is conferred on a learner, the University must be convinced that he/she for a period of four or five years, according to the requirements of the department concerned, has successfully occupied a full-time training post in the training hospitals of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the institution, or another institution that is recognised by the institution as equal; received theoretical and clinical instruction; was registered as a student at the institution for the prescribed period and successfully passed the prescribed University examinations - written, oral, practical and/or clinical, as prescribed. If a learner attains a qualification that can be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, the final year of residency at the University may be completed in a specialist post. Only a registrar's post is recognised as a training post by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The duration of the period of training is calculated from the day of registration as student at the institution. However, if a student registers during the prescribed registration period of the institution, such registration may be deemed to be valid from the first of January.

Assessment documents are moderated to ensure that

  • They conform to the scope and context of the competency as stipulated in the qualification.
  • They are constructed in such a way that the Assessor assesses the critical outcomes applied, during the Learner's activity performances, towards achieving an outcome.

Assessments are

  • To include confirmation of the Embedded Knowledge component to ensure that the Foundational Competency is achieved.
  • To be verified by Internal Verifiers to ensure valid, credible, true and fair results.

Horizontal Articulation

  • Master of Medicine, NQF Level 9, in related specialisation.
  • Relevant Postgraduate Diploma, NQF Level 9.

Vertical Articulation

  • Doctor of Medicine in Forensic Medicine, NQF Level 10.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
