Purpose
This qualification forms an optional academic part added to the usual part of the credentialing process, for medical practitioners, as specialists in Diagnostic Radiology.
Rationale
The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) stipulates training requirements, including a minimum period of experiential learning. It is usual for the examination to be taken and passed prior to the completion of the required period of supervised learning specified by the Health Professions Council South Africa. The aim of this qualification is to supplement the formal examination certification.

- Understand and advise on the safe use of ionising radiation.

- Certification, by the head of the candidate's training department that the candidate has spent at least one year in a Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) approved Department of Radiology prior to the Part One Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) examination.
- Certification, by the head of the candidate's training department that the candidate has spent at least three years in an (HPCSA) approved Department of Radiology prior to the Part Two CMSA examination.
- Certification, by the head of the candidate's training department that the candidate has spent at least four years in an (HPCSA) approved Department of Radiology prior to registration as a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
