Purpose and rationale

The purpose of this qualification is to obtain registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist clinician in the field of Dermatology.

Graduates will have comprehensive, in-depth knowledge, highly specialized technical (including diagnostic and therapeutic) skills as well as well-developed research skills in the field of Dermatology. An attitude of continuous learning will be developed.

To obtain scientific knowledge and associated practical experience characteristic for the discipline to obtain professional and technical skills required for competent assessment and management of the patients. To undertake and to complete a relevant research study.

The specialist works as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team. He communicates well with the patient, other members of the health care team and relevant members of the community.
