Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The aim of this qualification is to develop marketing researchers who are able to apply research methods and conduct independent research in order to provide solutions to contemporary marketing problems. Qualified learners should be able to demonstrate integrated knowledge on research methodologies and implement evidence based strategies to exploit market opportunities and solve marketing problems.

Rationale

The qualified learner should be able to provide viable, evidence based solutions to contemporary marketing problems by conducting independent research. The qualified learner should also be able to conceptualise marketing research problems, justify rationale for marketing research projects, show detailed understanding of the research process and prepare marketing reports which comply with the generally accepted norms for research at the masters' level.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

A panel of experts review learner's portfolio for prior learning and outcome communicated to Registrar. If outcome is not achieved learner may appeal RPL to the Faculty Board and the appeal will be presented to the Senate. Therefore RPL policy of institution will apply.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Marketing Management, NQF Level 8.

Or

  • Postgraduate Diploma, NQF Level 8 (in Marketing or a related field)

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1

  • Highlight the relevant and recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field in the listed and cited literature of the literature survey and the exposition.
  • Analyse, explain and justify correctly the models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies in the chosen field in oral presentations and the written record of research.
  • Justify fully and correctly the use of literature surveys /experimentation/correlation/casual analysis in oral presentations and the written record of research.
  • Identify, define and detail the research problem clearly in the research proposal and the stated hypothesis directs the investigation.
  • Show that logical interpretation of data reflects clear understanding of the relationship between facts in the study.
  • Evaluate contradictory information.
  • Utilise correctly and appropriately the information sources and include a range of media.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2

  • Apply the information technology skills effectively in information searches, data analyses, data presentation, and the production of the dissertation.
  • Apply the appropriate mathematical and statistical methods correctly to quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Validity of the inferences, interpretations and conclusions from measurements and statistical analyses is required.
  • Apply the language and numeracy skills effectively and correctly in communicating the research problem, its investigation, outcome and recommendations clearly.

Integrated Assessment

Learners will be formatively and summative assessed by regular evaluation of progress by supervisor and final evaluation of thesis by an external examiner and/or panel of selected evaluators. Theoretical aspects will be complemented by practical input, experience and expertise from industry.

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Marketing Management, NQF Level 10.

International comparability

The qualification was benchmarked with national and international related qualifications. The qualification was also reviewed by a panel of experts comprising national and international Professors in the marketing field. The continuous benchmarking process shall also involve presentations of dissertations at local and international colloquiums, conferences both locally and internationally as well as publications in in accredited conference proceedings and journals by qualifying learners.

The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
