Purpose and rationale

To enable the learner to contribute to the existing knowledge in a specialised field of journalism through independent research under supervision, as well as to demonstrate a mastery of competence in the form of a dissertation which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at this level.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Learners who do not meet the minimum entry requirements may enter the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in accordance with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) policy.

  • Honours Degree in Journalism, Level 8 or related discipline.

  1. Apply research methodology, techniques and knowledge appropriately and correctly to identify, address and resolve a problem or issue related to the field of Journalism.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the area of study related to the field of Journalism.

  1. Literature and media surveys/experimentation/correlation/causal analysis and a range or other methodologies in the Human Sciences is used and justified fully and correctly in oral presentation and in a written record of research.
  2. Research problem or issue is clearly identified, defined and detailed in a research proposal.

The stated hypothesis directs the research.

  1. Data is logically and critically interpreted.
  2. Information sources, including a range of media, are used correctly and critically.
  3. Information technology skills are applied effectively in information searches, data analysis, data presentation and the production of the dissertation.
  4. Appropriate statistical methods are applied appropriately to interpret qualitative and quantitative data.
  5. The inferences, interpretations and conclusions from measurements and statistical analyses are valid.
  6. The inferences, interpretations and conclusions from causal analyses are justified and logical.

Language and numeric skills are applied effectively and correctly in communicating the research problem, its investigation, outcome and recommendations clearly.

  1. Listed and cited literature of the literary survey and the exposition of the research reflects familiarity with relevant and recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
