Master of Health Sciences In Clinical Technology

This qualification is intended for learners who will make a contribution, through independent research, advanced problem-solving skills and critical, reflective thinking to perform research in a chosen field of Clinical Technology (i.e. either Cardiology, Cardiovascular Perfusion, Critical Care, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Neurology or Reproductive Biology) and present their findings in a report that meets the accepted criteria and ethical principles for the profession. The research problem, its justification, process and outcome should be reported in a dissertation that complies with the generally accepted norms for research at the Masters level. In this way, they will make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge for radiography ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical or applied knowledge that will develop and advance the profession of Clinical Technology.

Purpose and rationale

In this way, they will make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge for radiography ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical or applied knowledge that will develop and advance the profession of Clinical Technology.

Rationale

The South African government has expressed a need for both a specialised clinical technologist who can operate independently at an advanced level in Clinical Technology departments as well as those who will make a contribution, through independent research in a chosen field. This qualification has been structured to meet that need and provide for research within Clinical Technology through the inclusion of a research dissertation that complies with the accepted norms, criteria and ethical principles for research at that level. Learners obtaining this qualification will be able to conduct research within the field of Clinical Technology and present their findings at local and international conferences/seminars as well as publish them in accredited publications.

This is in keeping with the government's need for education to develop the area of science and technology.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Learners who do not meet the admission requirements as stipulated, but who are able to demonstrate experiential or work-based learning at an equivalent level may be considered for admission provided a thorough assessment of the prior learning has been conducted and the correct procedures have been followed. The process will be implemented strictly in accordance with the institution's assessment policies and procedures.

Entry Requirements.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • A relevant Bachelor Honours Degree or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma.
  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree at Level 8 may also be recognised as meeting the minimum entry requirement to a cognate Master's Degree qualification.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of the following compulsory module at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 8 totalling 180 Credits.

  • Research Thesis/Dissertation, 180 Credits.

  • Critically analyse and evaluate literature comprehensively to establish recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field.
  • Analyse, explain and use models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies correctly in the chosen field.
  • Clearly identify and define the research problem in the research proposal where the stated hypothesis directs the investigation.
  • Select and apply the appropriate methods and techniques in the collection of qualitative and quantitative data where appropriate.
  • Conduct experimental research responsibly and ethically.
  • Reflect and interpret data logically and demonstrate a clear understanding of the relationship between facts and the ability to evaluate contradictory information.
  • Valid inferences, interpretation and conclusions are drawn based on critical review of evidence from measurements and statistical analyses.
  • Use sources of information correctly and appropriately.
  • Apply information technology effectively in the production of the dissertation/research report.
  • Apply language and numeracy skills effectively and correctly in clearly communicating the research problem, its investigation, the outcome, and the recommendations.

Integrated Assessment

  • Formative Assessment will take place in the form of Oral presentations, research proposals and written progress reports.
  • Summative Assessment will be conducted through research dissertation, and oral and visual presentations.

The South African government has expressed a need for both a specialist Clinical Technologist who can operate independently at an advanced level in the various categories of clinical technology as well as those who will make a contribution, through independent research in a chosen field. The developed qualification should further be comparable with qualifications offered globally. This will ensure that South Africa is on par with international trends and that the learners who Graduate with these qualifications will have employment both nationally and internationally.
