Purpose and rationale

This qualification includes the various specialisations in Commerce. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

First purpose: To provide candidates in the private, public and voluntary sectors, who already have obtained the qualification B Comm, BComm Hons, with specialised knowledge and skills about technical and complex aspects of the economic and management sciences in order to promote sustainable growth and development and maximise prosperity in all sectors of the economy and society.

Second purpose: To develop competent leaders in the field of the economic and management sciences with specialised applied fundamental and generic cross functional knowledge and skills to steer sustainable development, growth and prosperity in the most appropriate direction.

Third purpose: To provide students who want to enroll for doctoral studies in the economic and management sciences, with a sound specialised academic base from which to do so and to conduct original research independently.

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BComm

Honours degree: BComm Hons

Other qualification

If the candidate has only a BComm degree, the Senate may admit the candidate on the condition that the minimum study period will be extended by one year to two years.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Demonstrated an ability to read, interpret and apply complex and technical economic and management related literature including the ability to teach themselves from source material.
  2. Shown an advanced understanding of the use of the scientific method in the acquisition of scientific economic and management related knowledge (e.g. the importance of using advanced research methodology)
  3. Demonstrated ability to identify and solve complex economic and management problems in a critical and creative way.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others as a member of a top management team in the private, developmental and public sectors.
  5. Demonstrated ability to organise and manage oneself and one's personal activities responsibly and effectively.
  6. Demonstrated ability to collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate technical and complex economic management related information.
  7. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical and complex economic and management related issues effectively, using visual, mathematical and or language skills in the modes of oral and or written persuasion
  8. Demonstrated ability to use advanced economic and management-related science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and interests of others
  9. Demonstrated specialised understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that economic and management related problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work with and apply a range of specialised economic and management related equipment, techniques, procedures and experimental approaches.
  11. Demonstrated ability to apply these advanced economic and management related knowledge and practical skills to address complex and technical theoretical and practical economic and management problems and to learn and apply appropriate lessons from these experiences.
  12. A specialised grasp of the theoretical underpinnings, the empirical bodies of knowledge and experience and the skills related to the core aspects of the relevant economic and management related subject matter.
  13. Equipped with a sound academic base to proceed with doctoral research.

Associated assessment criteria

  1. The assessment used for this qualification ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.
  2. A range of formative and summative assessment methods such as dissertations, research reports, written and oral presentations, tests and examinations are used.
  3. The required range of modalities is used integratively to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved.
  4. From the assessment of samples generalising to a domain takes place in a judicious and planned way in order to ensure reliability.
  5. The assessment used meets thw standard and level of achievement for NQF level 8.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Integrated assessment takes place in terms of a variety of procedures such as cross-disciplinary assignments, simulations, workplace assessments, dissertations, research reports, written examinations and oral presentation and examinations.

For the MComm degree: Horizontal articulation with other programmes in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences or outside faculties is enhanced by the elective modules on the master's level.

Vertical articulation into a PhD or DComm in the different sub-disciplines of the economic and management sciences is common at the university of Stellenbosch and students can also proceed to doctoral programmes at most universities in South Africa
