Purpose and rationale

This qualification includes the various specialisations in Commerce. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

  • To provide qualifiers with an advanced knowledge, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, effective oral and written

communication skills, problem solving skills in their chosen field, that would enable them to be self-driven, and integrated thinkers who can critically evaluate the literature pertaining to the field of specialisation and continued professional growth.

  • To provide South Africa with researchers who are capable of contributing to the production and advancement of knowledge in commerce, business and management.
  • To provide South Africa with a significant number of researchers in order to ensure that the local research leadership and scholarly activity is widened.

  • B. Com. Hons. Degree or another approved related Commercial Honours Degree;

Recognition of prior learning for access to this qualification

  • In cases where prior learning at other institutions, or relevant experience, is deemed by the Dean to compensate for the lack of for mal qualifications required above, a candidate may be admitted to M.Com.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
