Purpose and rationale

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with

Practical Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability: in the following skills and to make informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills; research skills, cognitive skills. All skills at an advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.

Foundational Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of: analysis and interpretation of skills; language formulation and communication analysis of texts. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.

Reflexive Competence: The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking, reflective thinking. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

All potential learners who claim to have achieved the entrance level of this qualification through experience, need to apply to the Accreditation Committee of the Faculty of Arts. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty's prescriptions and guidelines.

Potential learners who want to be credited for prior learning and/or experience for a particular module or modules, need to apply (in writing) to the Departmental Chairperson, of the department offering the module or modules the learners wish to be credited for, clearly stating the title(s) of the module or modules they want to be credited for, as well as the basis on which they believe the accreditation should be granted.

The principles of RPL are subscribed to, and will be implemented in, a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not to be to the detriment of the potential learner, and that his/her chance to succeed must be reasonable.

The Committee will assess learners' competencies in order to determine whether they are eligible for: a) access to, b) advanced placement in, or c) recognition of status for, this qualification.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Latin, NQF Level 8.

Or

  • Bachelor of Arts Honours: Latin Literature, NQF Level 8.

Or

  • Postgraduate Diploma: Latin, NQF Level 8.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Reflective skills: Learners should be able to reflect on text/process of problem-solving. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  2. Solve text critical problems, also in the form of research articles, based on relevant knowledge/theories. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  3. Work with other postgraduate learners and lecturers in Latin in order to promote research seminars. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  4. Do basic and medium research work based on knowledge of research methodology, including the fields of Latin linguistics, philosophy and culture. Reflect on the success of research. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  5. Read Latin at an advanced level. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  6. Reveal a sound knowledge of specialized literature and the skills to find and use such literature. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  7. Acquired a sound sensitivity in the fields of Latin aesthetics and culture. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.
  8. Learners' knowledge of Roman democracy (and its evolution) will strengthen their responsibilities as a citizen even more.
  9. Display their knowledge in the field of Latin language effectively and appropriately. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Latin.

Associated assessment criteria

  1. Will the learner display-at an advanced level - a sound knowledge of handling text critical problems? Will he be able to analyse, translate, discuss such a text at an advanced level?
  2. Is the learner able to communicate effectively with others, in a written and/or oral manner, at an advanced level in the field of Latin?
  3. Will the learner have acquired teamwork skills at an advanced level in order to research seminars?
  4. Have the skills to write (a) research article(s) in an appropriate way at an advanced level?
  5. Display a sound translation technique at an advanced level?
  6. Reveal a detailed knowledge of specialized literature at an advanced level?
  7. Display a sound aesthetic sensitivity at an advanced level?
  8. Have knowledge and experience to become a better citizen?
  9. Display sound language skills in the field of ancient Latin at an advanced level?

Integrated Assessment

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented.

Essays, seminars, translation exercises, presentations.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented.

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of final assessment of the research dissertation.

Two written exams (in June, November of January) and an assessment of the mini-dissertation.

This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

Horizontal Articulation

  • Master of Arts: Latin Literature, NQF Level 9.

Vertical Articulation

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Latin, NQF Level 10.
  • Doctor of Literature: Latin, NQF Level 10.

NOTES

This MA wtih endorsement qualification is registered as a separate qualification only with SAQA. At the Department of Education it is not registered separately, but is included in the registration of the generic MA.
