Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The Master of Arts provides advanced training in the techniques of research, analysis and scholarly presentation appropriate to languages, Theology, Philosophy, Political Science and other related fields. The qualification will equip the learner with the skills necessary either for employment in the educational and cultural fields or for further, independent research for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same or related subject area.

Rationale

Scholars in Humanities and Social Sciences are becoming rare in the developing world as focus has shifted to Technology and the Sciences. However, there is ample evidence from the developed world that society cannot improve without experts in the Human and Social Sciences, hence the need for such a qualification. This is also in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET's) creation of the Charter for Humanities and Social Sciences. The learners would be equipped to work in both the private and public sectors. Thus they will be at the forefront of contributing to national and international development. They will also record and document societal issues for posterity. Learners will also be prepared adequately for doctoral study in the chosen fields.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Learners who do not meet the admission criteria as stipulated, but who can demonstrate experiential or work-based learning at an equivalent level may be considered for RPL provided a proper assessment of the prior learning has been conducted. Learners may also apply for exemption from certain modules on the grounds of credits obtained from relevant qualifications of study concerned. The process will be implemented in strict adherence to the relevant institutional policies and approval by relevant faculty structures.

International comparability

This qualification is offered in the United States of America (New York) and the University of Namibia. The requirement was designed after observing what is being provided in these countries so that the qualification will be nationally relevant and internationally comparable. The requirement is also in line with the educational objectives of SAQA's prescribed NQF Level 9. The qualification deals with cutting-edge debates of relevance to advanced learners of Africa, irrespective of the regions of the continent or the disciplines that interest them most. The qualification incorporates classical elements in the study of the humanities. Evidence consistently demonstrates that influential leaders in all sectors of society-government, business, legal, medical, educational and others - have a solid intellectual grounding in the arts, especially the humanities. It put an emphasis on developing learners' ability to think independently and critically, and that is what we also strive for. This is why learners are poised to succeed in the South African and global contexts alike.
