Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The Diploma in Policing includes Communication, End-User Computing, Law Policing, Policing, Human Rights, Law of Evidence, Investigation of Crime and Criminal Procedure modules. Law enforcement officers mainly deal with crime and evidence, and in the execution of their duties, they have to ensure that they act within their constitutional mandate and do not exceed powers vested to them by various statutes within their line of duty. This qualification aims to equip the learner with the necessary skills to ensure efficiency in the execution of their law enforcement duties by applying the legal principles in line with the current legislation. Also, the qualification ensures that learners operate within their constitutional mandate and do not exceed powers vested in them. To keep the learner abreast with the latest developments, that are relevant to the field of study.
Rationale
There was a need to offer the qualification due to demand and the restructuring of the South African Police Service (SAPS) vision in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (RSA). The society and learners will benefit in that correct procedures and principles will be applied to ensure efficiency in the law enforcement spheres. The qualification will enhance the status, productivity and employability of the learner within the industry, particularly within the police environment as well as contribute to the quality and growth within the safety in the society. Further, the state will not waste its resources because the officers possessing the relevant qualification will execute their duties with a high level of diligence and meet the expected outcomes.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) shall be recognised, subject to the requirements of the qualification and as per institution's policy for RPL. RPL may be used to demonstrate competence for admission into this qualification. Evidence of prior learning must be through formal RPL processes.
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- National Senior Certificate (NSC), NQF Level 4 granting access to Diploma studies.

- Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 with endorsement.

- National Certificate Vocational (NC(V)), NQF Level 4 granting access to Diploma studies.

- Manage the scene of the incident for investigation purposes.
- Apply different investigation methods and techniques during the different investigation phases.
- Investigate a scene according to crime investigation principles and techniques.

- Evaluate record-keeping systems and practices to determine adherence to systems and how systems can be improved.
- Analyse the influence of record-keeping on the criminal justice systems used in terms of its potential effect on the integrity of the chain of custody.

- Apply the principles outlined in the public management finance activities within a work environment.

Formative Assessment
The qualification provides for sufficient practical application of knowledge, skills and attitudes across modules to ensure that the learner's competencies can be assessed through formative assessment and summative assessment. The assessment types are tutorials, assignments, projects, presentation and tests.
Summative Assessment
Learners will take the examination at the end of each year.

This qualification contains the following Standards: Set, monitor and review strategies for policing operations; Formulate, monitor and review tactics to achieve strategic objectives for policing operations; Evaluate and improve organisational performance; Manage the use of physical resources; Maintain activities to meet requirements; Manage information for action; Use information to make critical decisions; Chair and participate in meetings; Set and manage local media strategies; Promote health and safety culture in the workplace.
