Purpose and rationale
- To develop a wide choice of stimulating modules in different disciplines (Anthropology, Archeology, Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Development Studies, Public Administration and Political Science) which will lead to career opportunities.
- To provide qualifiers with knowledge and skills in the respective study field, as well as research skills and life-long independent and critical cognitive abilities.
- To equip learners with the ability to apply tools of research in real life situations to the benefit of the community.
- To contribute as experts in their field of study to the improvement of the public and the private sector.
Entry requirements and RPL
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
At least a recognized first degree. Exception, persons with a first degree from another faculty with suitable previous experience and input into applicable programmes in their study fields e. g. at NGO's, may be allowed to register for the qualification. Recognition of prior learning will depend on the requirements of the various departments.

Associated assessment criteria
- Select a researchable topic in the appropriate field and follow scientific procedures. Discussion during seminar presentations.
- To have a clear vision of what is expected of them and what must be gained through the use of correct various skills of research.
- Learners to understand the quality of his work.
Appointed internal and external examiners and or supervisors as well as peer reviews will actually assess the quality of the work of the qualifiers to ensure that appropriate standards are researched or achieved at the exit levels.
- Selection and utilization of correct data analysis methods in interpreting findings of an Investigation.
- Report the findings of the investigation in writing showing the qualifier can express himself clearly.

Formative method of evaluation
Participation in discussion groups, debates, seminar presentations, fieldwork experience as well as contribution of current events information.
Summative method
This will include amongst others, open book examinations and semester examinations (depending on the various departments concerned).
Progression and comparability
Articulation options
Vertically articulation: students with a B. Soc. SC. (Hons) may enrol for the M. Soc. SC. Programme at Fort Hare or any other university.
Horizontally articulation: This includes internally articulation as well as interfaculty articulation depending on the learners past experience on the various departments assessment of the learners suitability for enrolment for the qualification.
