Purpose and rationale

The first purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level (level 7) knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of Plant Production, that provide for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

The second purpose of this qualification is to provide southern Africa with professional Crop-, Horticultural- and Pasture Scientists, who will have a clear and continuously growing understanding of the interaction between the plants and the environment, based on the sound knowledge and understanding of the functional anatomy, physiology, growth, genetics, nutrition and management of field crops, horticultural crops, pasture and rangeland.

Thirdly, this qualification will equip graduates to make important contributions to such applied fields as environmental management, livestock production systems, nature conservation, reclamation of degraded lands, wild life management, irrigation management and weed control.

Matriculation certificate

Matriculation certificate with Mathematics, Afrikaans or English and Natural Science on the higher grade with at least a "D" symbol.

Exit level outcomes

Learners will have knowledge of the basic principles and practices of Plant Production, with emphasis on the interaction between plants and the environment, as well as the skills required for the production and management of field crops, horticultural crops, pastures and rangeland.
