Purpose and rationale

The Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Botany is to provide the learners with lower

post-graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of fields of Botanical Science.

It will also provide the nation with Honours graduates in the Botanical Sciences. Such graduates can feed into the country 's needs for scientists and managers in the spheres of general Botany as well as specialists in sub-fields therein.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

i) Prior accredited learning in the form of Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and in the same degree level of an appropriate field.

(ii) Where it can be demonstrated and assessed, additional and relevant prior learning may also be recognized.

The learners will demonstrate the following

a) An in depth understanding of the major principles of Botany and related sciences as well as selected more specialized principles.

(b) A knowledge and understanding of the major and specialized course fields.

(c) A knowledge of the practical techniques appropriate to the major and specialized course fields.

(d) A degree of competence in undertaking research and presentation of mini-dissertations.

Associated assessment criteria

Learners

  • Will use specialized principles in the analysis and interpretation of Botanical problems;
  • will use the laws and knowledge of the major and specialized course fields in solving problems within those fields;
  • Will be able to identify the appropriate techniques in solving basis and specialized Botanical problems;
  • Will be able to execute basic experiments and undertake surveys and collections to a level appropriate to the degree;
  • Will be able to interpret their results in terms of background information;
  • Will be able to present reports of their investigations;

Integrated Assessment

The learner will be required to demonstrate applied competence using a range of formative and summative assessment methods including assignments, seminars, practical reports and examinations. Research planning, research procedures and the research report will be very important.

Progression and comparability

Articulation options

Certain horizontal articulation possibilities exist with other BSc (Hons) degrees, e.g. BSc (Hons) degrees in Chemistry, Entomology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology and in Agriculture.

In terms of vertical articulation, learners will be able to proceed to a Masters degree in Botany or equivalent both at Fort Hare, other South African universities and other tertiary institutions elsewhere.
