Purpose and rationale

The main purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the knowledge, skills and competence to perform the following functions.

+formulate, compound and manufacture safe and effective medicines

+distribute, dispense and control safe and effective medicines

+act as the custodian in an advisory role in the safe, rational and appropriate use of medicines

+provide essential clinical pharmacy services, health care education and information

+provide pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for the outcome of therapy

+provide cost-efficient effective pharmaceutical and services

Entry requirements and RPL

This programme recognises the formal/non-formal prior learning which learners who register for the programme bring to the learning situation.

Further Education and Training (FET) certificates, or equivalent, appropriate training within the requirements of the National Qualifications Framework are required. Mathematical, Physical Science and Biology are compulsory.

  • Organise and control the manufacturing compounding and packaging of pharmaceutical products.
  • Organise the procurement, storage and distribution of pharmaceutical materials and products.
  • Dispense and ensure the optimal of medicines prescribed to the patient.
  • Provide pharmacist initiated care to the patient and ensure the optimal use of medicine.
  • Provide information and education on health care and medicine
  • Promote community health and provide related information and advice.
  • Participate in research to ensure the optimal use of medicines.
