Purpose and rationale

This qualification aims to provide graduates with knowledge, skills, attitudes and applied competence in a number of fields traditionally associated with Medicine. It aims to provide graduates with the foundations for continued personal and intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and for contributing to society at large through innovation, scholarship and leadership.

Entry requirements and RPL

Full matriculation exemption with, almost exclusively, at least 38 points, but generally higher levels are required.

Exit level outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of health and its promotion, and of disease;

its aetiology, prevention and management, in the context of the whole;

  • Demonstrate individual and his or her place in the family and society;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basis clinical skills: history taking comprehensive physical and mental state examination, interpretation of findings;
  • Demonstrate competence in the performance of a limited number of basic technical procedures and become proficient in listening to and responding to patients concerns;
  • Demonstrate attitudes necessary for the achievement of high standards of medical practice, both in relation to the provision of care of individuals and populations and to his or her personal development;
  • Demonstrate computer and numeracy skills;
  • Demonstrate competency in interpretation of medical literature.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.
