Bachelor of Library and Information Studies

The purpose of the programme is to focus on the education and training of Library and Information Service personnel while maintaining well-recognised international standards in its curricula. In order to redress the inequities of the past the Department lays great emphasis on helping individuals from the educationally and economically disadvantaged communities to acquire professional education and training in Library and Information Science. It aims to help conserve and explore the environmental and cultural resources of the Southern African region and to encourage a wide awareness of them in the community by making its graduates not only literate in the printed and electronic sources of information but also in the vast wealth of information in the oral traditions. It strives to equip graduates with knowledge and skills to enter the labour market and serve both the technologically advantaged and disadvantaged sectors.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Entry Requirements

  • Senior Certificate, Level 4 with matriculation exemption.
  • National Senior Certificate, Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's Degree studies.
  • National Certificate (Vocational), Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's Degree studies.

Students will demonstrate

  1. Basic library and information service skills.
  2. The skills of critical thinking and debate, reading and interpretation.
  3. Information Technology (IT) competencies required in the Information Society.
  4. How to acquire, search for, use and disseminate information and how to reproduce it.

Associated assessment criteria

  • Library and information science information is given and an appropriate service provided.
  • Critical reading and analysis of library information is done and debates are conducted.
  • Effective communication with peers and the broader community, both orally and in writing is undertaken.
  • Information Technology (IT) is effectively used in providing a library service.
  • Information is retrieved, managed, stored and reproduced as required.

Integrated Assessment

A variety of assessment procedures will be used. These will include the following

assignments, contributions to class debates, examinations, tests, peer assignments, practical field work.
