Purpose

• The purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with an advanced professional qualification.
• To enable learners to show advance knowledge in library and information studies by mastering the theoretical substance of the field.
• Show skills and attitudes in research by using a wide range of techniques or methods appropriately in the field of library and information Science.
• To improve the standard of information provision in organisations and in the community/society by producing experts in the field of information management.
• Empower learners with higher managerial skills by being able to identify and define complex problems and their solutions in the topic (research fields) of their choice.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

1. Use knowledge of various research methodologies in Social Sciences with special emphasis on library and information Studies.
2. Show an in-depth knowledge of theories of management and the application of management techniques in the information environment.
3. Identify children's and young adults' literature and services.
4. Understand the socio-cultural context of literacy as well as skills in sustaining literary programmes.
5. Show familiarity with the publishing industry and modern publishing processes.
6. Organise and manage oneself and ones activities effectively to contribute to full personnel development.
7. Work effectively as a member of a team, group or organisation.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1

• The exhibition of this outcome is by the learners producing a mini dissertation from a topic accepted by the department and various committees in charge.

• Analyse and assess information needs and demands of specialised interest groups in society. The achievement of this outcome involves the ability of the learners to apply theory and to find solutions to pertinent problems.

• The assessment criteria involves the ability of the learners to categorise and evaluate this literature.

Integrated assessment

Formative assessment: assignments, discussions, brain-storming sessions, research projects; seminars, visual and oral presentations.

Summative: Examinations and the productions of a mini dissertation.
