Purpose and rationale
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills which are the foundation which will enable learners to gain entry into the formal legal profession (e.g. attorneys/advocates) and other careers in law.
This qualification indicates that the learner has both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to translate into competent performance in the labour market.

Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Senior Certificate NQF Level 4, with endorsement.
Or
- National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's studies.
Or
- National Certificate Vocational, NQF Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's studies.

Exit level outcomes
- Learners will have a sound knowledge of South African law, and be able to apply the law to practical problems;
- Learners will have all the skills and proficiencies necessary to translate these into competent performance in the field of law;
- Learners will have a core set of ethics pertaining to their responsibilities as practitioners of law in a developing country.
Associated assessment criteria
- The learner will be assessed through group discussions, dissertations and an examination as to the basic level of knowledge pertaining to principles of law.
- The level of assessment will be to test the learners in the solving of typical practical problems encountered in legal practice. The latter will serve as a tool to enable the learners to solve problems that were not encountered in the teaching situation.
- Input from practitioners in the field of law will be used, as well as academic assessment by external examiners and moderators.
The learners will be continually assessed to ascertain whether they
- Have the necessary detailed knowledge of the SA legal system;
- Have the ability to translate their knowledge in solving practical problems.
