Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The qualifying learners will

  • Have a broad business understanding and real-world perspective to be Information Systems enablers in organisations;
  • Understand the strategic significance of Information Systems;
  • Develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills to be able to apply both traditional and old concepts and skills;
  • Design and implement information technology solutions that enhance organisational performance; e) exhibit strong ethical principles;
  • Demonstrate an excellent interpersonal communication and team skills; g) skills in basic statistical and mathematical models to be used in analysing data; and g) understand that systems consist of people, hardware, software and data.

Rationale

Skilled Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) professionals are in high demand in South Africa because ICT skills are a scarce skill in South Africa. This qualification specifically recognises the skills shortages in the seven occupational fields of Auditing, Entrepreneurship, e-business, Geographical Information Systems, Information Science, taxation and data science. The Bachelor of Information Technology with specialisation in Information Systems, BIT (IS) will address this shortage.

Learners focus on designing, building, implementing and securing information systems that meet the needs of people, organisations and society at large. They combine the skills that they learn from the qualification with their own unique personal and professional interests to build and implement computer and information systems in real-life organisations.

The typical learner will have an understanding and interest in the world of business and the world of Information Technology. In addition, they will have a broad interest in one of the following fields: Auditing, Entrepreneurship, e-business, Geographical Information Systems, Information Science, taxation or data science.

There are seven streams from which learners can choose. The qualifying learner will be able to operate in the following occupations:

  • Computer Auditing.

  • e-Business.
  • Geography.
  • Data Science Management.
  • e-Taxation.

The BIT (Information Systems), will be followed by a BIT Hons (Information Systems) qualification.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

This qualification allows possibilities for both horizontal and vertical articulation.

Horizontal Articulation

  • Advanced Diploma in Information Technology, NQF Level 7.

Vertical Articulation

  • Bachelor of Information Systems Honours in Information Technology, NQF Level 8.

International comparability

The Bachelor in Information Technology has different names in different countries (e.g. BIT, BInfTech, B.Tech(IT) or BE(IT)) They have the following aspects in common:

  • It is an undergraduate Degree,
  • The duration is typically 3-5 years,
  • It differs from a Computer Science Degree in that learners are exposed to business management, business information systems and information science as well as a reduced focus on mathematics.

In Australia, the qualification always includes at least one six-month job placement (industry-based learning). The University of Technology in Sydney presents a BIT three-year qualification with two six-month placements. The BIT qualification at the University of New South Wales also includes a six-month job placement but stretches over four years.

In the Netherlands, the qualification is a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (B.ICT) and is over four years. Modules include Informatics, Computer Engineering, Information Science or Software Engineering.

In Australia, there are four Bachelor qualifications

  • Bachelor of Business Information Systems (La Trobe University, Melbourne)
  • Bachelor of Business Information Systems (University of Wollongong)
  • Bachelor of Information Technology (Information Systems Development) (University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba
  • Bachelor of Information Technology (Information Systems) (Queensland University of Technology)

None of these qualifications has the streams (electives) included in their BIT(IS) qualifications.

There is no degree internationally that compares with BIT(IS), which makes it a unique Degree.
