Bachelor of Commerce in Law

Purpose

In addition to the academic and principle-oriented shaping of students, the purpose of this qualification is to

• Equip students with knowledge and specific skills, related to the ability to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in various branches of the legal profession and the economic and business environments (private and public sector), with a view to further personal intellectual development, economic activities and community service.
• Provide the foundation for and produce qualified people to undertake further studies and research in the legal, economic and business environments for purposes of obtaining an Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Postgraduate qualification in any of the specialisation fields.

Rationale

The rationale of this qualification is to deliver graduates in the fields of law, economics and business who are able to integrate basic knowledge, techniques and expertise in each of the specialisation fields, and who are empowered to apply the acquired knowledge, principles, theories and skills in relevant environments in society, to think critically and innovatively and to solve complex problems.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

This institution accepts the principle underlying outcomes based, source-based-and life-long learning, in which considerations of articulation and mobility play a significant role, and subscribes to the view that Recognition of Prior Learning, whether acquired by formal education curricula at this or another institution, or informally (by experience) is an indispensable element in deciding on admission to and awarding credits in an explicitly selected teaching-learning programme of this institution. Formal prior learning: Prior accredited learning at the Further Education and Training (FET) or Higher Education and Training (HET) Level in relevant domains, which constitute credit-bearing units or modules, should be recognised if evidence can be produced that shows that the student has achieved, at a satisfactory level, the outcomes and associated assessment criteria specified for modules of this qualification and, if appropriate, allows the Recognition of Prior Learning for the achievement of the qualification in part. Non-formal and informal prior experiential learning: An applicant who falls outside of the formal qualifications system but who can demonstrate (through the production of substantial and satisfactory evidence) experiential or work based learning or a non-formal qualification (or a combination), may be considered for admission and/or for the recognition of prior learning for the achievement of the qualification in part or in full. An applicant who, after such assessment, is deemed to have sufficient potential but is in need of further academic development, will be directed to other suitable learning programmes prior to admission or to parallel programmes after admission.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission into the Bachelors studies are

• National Senior Certificate (NSC) or National Certificate Vocational (NCV) for Degree studies.

Or

• Matriculation exemption may be admitted to this qualification.

• Demonstrate detailed and integrated knowledge and understanding of the historical and jurisprudential development of the law, the role of Law in society in general, certain concepts, principles, structures and theories of South African law, economics and business as well as the ability to engage with and apply the acquired knowledge within relevant contexts.
• Identify, engage with and address ethical issues pertaining to the academic, legal, economic and business environments and society in general and to act accordingly with integrity and professionally.
• Investigate, critically analyse, understand and solve complex real-life and/or hypothetical economic, business and/or legal related problems in a coherent and creative manner, demonstrating advanced use of his/her multidisciplinary knowledge, ability to collect, analyse and organise information, critical thinking and research skills.
• Formulate, present and communicate insightful and creative academic and professional ideas and opinions in well-formed arguments effectively (verbally and in writing), using appropriate media and communication technologies and suitable research methods.
• Read, interpret and draft legal and other documents.
• Demonstrate a competence in certain legal skills, as well as in relevant language, computer and numerical skills.

Integrated Assessment

Formative assessment such as assignments done in class, group work, written assignments and tests. Summative assessment: examination papers (3 hours). Integrated assessment: written assignments and assignments done in class (written and oral).
