Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial Psychology

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the mastering, analysing, interpretation and application of industrial psychological principles and methods as an intellectual knowledge base for a career in industrial psychology/human resource management. The qualification will prepare learners to reflect on their own industrial psychological applications and to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management within their everyday lives. Lastly it will prepare them for further study in Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management, and as such provide them with the option of registering as a counsellor (after having obtained B Psych status on honours level) and as an industrial psychologist (after having obtained D Psych status on doctoral level).

Purpose and rationale

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the mastering, analysing, interpretation and application of industrial psychological principles and methods as an intellectual knowledge base for a career in industrial psychology/human resource management. The qualification will prepare learners to reflect on their own industrial psychological applications and to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management within their everyday lives. Lastly it will prepare them for further study in Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management, and as such provide them with the option of registering as a counsellor (after having obtained B Psych status on honours level) and as an industrial psychologist (after having obtained D Psych status on doctoral level).

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Current competencies acquired by prior learning in this field through related experience will be assessed. Application for entry will be assessed by an accreditation committee of the Department of Human Resource Management, upon which the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences will approve the assessment. If an applicant does not meet the admittance requirements stated, a route for further studies will be suggested by the Departmental Committee. Such competencies may help gain access to the qualification or advanced placement in it.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's studies.

The learners should be able to

  1. Demonstrate their competence at applying the basic theoretical principles of problem identification and solving in the field of economic, business and people management correctly and reflect on the application made. (Problem solving skills)

Integrated Assessment

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented

Learners are assessed continually via written class assignments, essays, informal class tests and one formal written test per module which will be utilised as an entry requirement for exam purposes. A minimum mark of 40 % per module is required for entry into summative assessments.

Learners will also need to complete written and practical assignments and answer questions which they will then self-assess on the basis of model answers given.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a written 3-hour examination for each module. A final mark will be calculated based on the average of each module's test and exam mark.

  • Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, NQF Level 7.
