Purpose and rationale

The qualification aims

  1. To introduce learners to the working of the economy and the role the individual, business and government play in the functioning of the economy.
  2. To teach learners macroeconomic and microeconomic theories and how to apply the methodology in economics in analysing contemporary human and social problems.
  3. To prepare learners in the problem-solving approach in their learning and to instil in them the ethical responsibilities at their prospective workplace and community at large.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Understand, analyse and critically assess macroeconomic and microeconomic policy issues.
  2. Manage financial institutions in the private, government and non-government sectors.
  3. Understand published macro and microeconomic data and begin to analyse them.
  4. Know the different forms of markets.
  5. Understand the basis of decisions making business in determining investment.
  6. Know the reason behind government policies in privatisation, government spending and taxation.
  7. Understand the activities of consumers, producers and suppliers of goods and service regarding how resources are allocated.
  8. Know the meaning of economic variables such as inflation, unemployment and the sources of such variables (data).
  9. Understand the public sector and demonstrate an understanding of taxation and fiscal policy.
