Purpose and rationale
- Prepare learners for the corporate computing world. With the increasing importance of information technology in the business environment, qualifying learners possessing a knowledge of both business studies and information systems are well equip for a successful career.
- Produce Learners with intellectual, entrepreneurial and practical skills relevant to the dynamic market environment. This will be achieved through a curriculum that is designed for this purposes.
- Offer an attractive combination of information systems with business studies.
- Introduce learners to the structure of the organisation and the environment in which they operate, the functional areas of business, their legal responsibility and the role of information in organisations.
- Provide learners with opportunity to study subjects such as accounting and economics, as well as developing interpersonal skills necessary for a successful future career.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- National Senior Certificate granting access to Bachelor studies, NQF Level 4.
- Or
- Diploma in Business Information Systems, NQF Level 6.

- Learners should be able to think contextually.
- Must be able to apply analytical techniques learned to a range of practical problems in the business environment.
- Must demonstrate competence in management information techniques used in the corporate world.
- Must demonstrate their grasp of the principles of and database commercial programming.
Dip Com (BIS)
- Learners must be able to apply major principles and processes used in developing and maintaining information systems.
- Should be able to describe important issues in the management of information systems function, explain subsystems comprising business systems, demonstrate understanding of main areas of concern in the control of computerised system, and use computers to solve typical business problems.
- Learners should show competence in systems analysis and design process modelling, database and computer interface design.
Cert Com (BIS)
- Learners should be able to perform basic information processing tasks.
- Learners should be able to use computers for problem solving tasks, and must be able to apply major principles and processes used in developing and maintaining information systems.
- Learners should demonstrate their understanding and skills to support good computing practice demonstrate understanding of the use of computer hardware and software and be able to use computers for related organisational issues through the practical use of spreadsheets, data bases and graphics.
- Learners must describe importance issues in the management of information systems function, be able to explain subsystems, demonstrate their understanding of the main areas of concern in the control of computerised systems.
Associated assessment criteria
- Qualification is awarded on successful completion of all the prescribed modules and practical experience (i.e., supervised work experience).
- The learners should be able to relate learning gained in practical or industrial attachment to knowledge encountered in class and lecturer, and vice versa.
