Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Mathematical Statistics

To provide candidates in the private, public and voluntary sectors with advanced core knowledge and research skills relevant to the technical aspects of Mathematical Statistics and its applied branches in order to promote sustainable growth and development and maximise prosperity in all sectors of the economy and society.

To develop competent leaders in the private, public and voluntary sectors with applied fundamental and cross-functional technical knowledge and skills to steer sustainable development, growth and prosperity in the most appropriate direction.

To provide students who want to enrol for more specialised studies in Mathematical Statistics with a sound academic base from which to do so.

To give students a broad foundation in the basic discipline of Mathematical Statistics so that they are exposed to the skills and knowledge required to undertake further advanced graduate studies in this basic discipline.

To equip students with knowledge of statistical inference to analyse relationships in the economy, in order to assist market participants and to provide tools for policy analysis.

To equip students with specific statistical knowledge and skills to apply to the world of business, that will prepare them in a unique way for employment in the private and public sectors.

Students who receive an Honours in Bachelor of Commerce are equipped for a career in the field of management and commerce and to act as managers in both the private and public sectors, where their participation promotes development to the benefit of the whole society.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Entry Requirements

• Bachelor of Commerce, Level 7 with 60% for statistics.

The successful student will demonstrate

1. An understanding of the working of a modern market economy, and the role of statistics in it, especially the interactions between market behaviour, policy interventions and economic outcomes.
2. An understanding of and the ability to use statistical research to analyse economic and social phenomena.

Students must show their ability to

• Think critically about statistical research by, for example, analysing arguments and identifying erroneous thinking.
• Interpret the relevant data, especially empirical data.
• Apply statistical research skills to economic and social behaviour and phenomena.
• Identify and analyse statistically economic phenomena and trends.

Integrated Assessment

• Evaluation will take place by means of assignments, tests and examinations, mostly in written but sometimes also in oral format. Continuous evaluation will include essays, oral presentations, tests and practical work. The research report will consist of the application of statistical research on an economic topic.

The student must

• Achieve a minimum of 50% in all modules, with the proviso that he/she may achieve a minimum of 45% for a maximum of 2 modules in elective courses.
• Complete all compulsory assignments satisfactorily.
• Demonstrate successful integration of theoretical and practical aspects of Mathematical Statistics with other fields of commerce in assignments and the research report.
