Purpose and rationale
To develop the intellectual and practical ability of the student in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and understanding of the following:
- The complexity of relationships within organisations.
- The interaction between the organisation and its environment.
- The functional disciplines within the organisation and their contribution to organisational success.
- Develop a strategy for learning.

Entry requirements and RPL
Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Social Science or admission to the status thereof and have obtained a pass in Business Administration III, Economics III, Industrial Psychology or Psychology III or Industrial Labour Studies III or Political Science III or Sociology III at a level of at least 60%.
Students are expected to possess the necessary linguistic and numeracy skills to successfully deal with the subject matter of the course. Students are also required to possess the social skills necessary to make presentations to their peers and to work effectively in groups.

Integrated assessment
The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

Continuous assessment
- Class presentations, participation in class discussions and assignments for each module.
- The combine marks for all of these yields a year mark for each module, which contributes 50% to the total mark for the module.
Final Assessment
- An examination for each module, which contributes 50% to the total mark for the module.
Dissertation
- A research project, which may include an empirical research component.
The individual modules and the dissertation contribute equally to the final mark for the qualification. Successful completion of the programme requires that students obtain a minimum of 50% in each module.
