Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Visual Arts Illustration is

  • To extend and deepen the learner's familiarity with the content of the applied arts as a field of research and debate in the humanities (including the social sciences).
  • To this end they are equipped with intellectual and cognitive skills to solve relatively complex problems, utilising appropriate methods and theories.

Rationale

The qualification ensures South Africa has sufficient specialists in the illustration by equipping learners with a comprehensive set of specialised and focused creative, technical and administrative skills applicable to illustration as an area of specialisation within the broader field of the arts and related fields.

The qualification also provides learners with academic and intellectual skills, in order to equip them for more specialised further study at Master's level.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.

In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Arts, NQF Level 7.

Or

  • Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art, NQF Level 7.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of the following compulsory and elective modules at NQF Level 8 totalling 120 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Ask appropriate questions, analyse data and map new information, under guidance, into a coherent understanding of the discipline, and solve more complex problems using appropriate methods and theories.
  2. Organise and manage their activities effectively.
  3. Organise concepts and ideas and communicate them effectively using visual, linguistic and kinetic skills in oral, written and media formats.
  4. Make an innovative and productive contribution to the South African graphic design industry in the areas of advertising, book illustration, medical illustration, botanical illustration and photography, as well as in disciplines that require a high degree of illustrative competence in communicating to the illiterate (such as in road safety and health initiatives).
  5. Contribute to the community as creative and innovative thinkers.

Associated assessment criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner

  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge, which takes the form of a research essay on a topic directly related to the area of specialisation.
  • Demonstrate the content submitted are correct and interpret questions, analyse and utilise information, and to communicate the resulting deductions clearly and logically, utilising the appropriate discipline-specific conventions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to show creative, technical and other practical skills, in the form of an assessment of practical work assignments.
  • Submit and present a professional exhibition of work completed.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in the specific skills taught, a clear knowledge of related theoretical concepts and conventions.
  • Apply skills, theories and conventions, and an ability to apply these skills, theories and conventions in a practical body of work.
  • Ensure the viability of the final body of work as a professional portfolio suitable for presentation to a publisher.

Integrated Assessment

An exhibition of work produced and a research project at the end of the period of study and an evaluation of the execution of the two projects assessed the learner's ability to integrate the learning of the course as a whole.
