Bachelor of Arts Honours in Translation

The purpose of his qualification is to develop in learners a critical understanding of the role of language as the primary form of human communication in society amongst at least two language groups. Learners will develop a sophisticated proficiency in the use of at least one language, increase their capacity to interpret and analyse various forms of discourse and acquire applied language and communication expertise in Translation.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

• Bachelor of Arts, NQF Level 7.

• Demonstrate the ability to bridge cultural and linguistic differences when translating;
• Develop insight into and knowledge of translation theory and its application;
• Acquire an understanding of how meaning is created and transmitted in the source and target language;
• Develop communicative and strategic competencies and the ability to edit texts;
• Become critically aware of text structures and how meaning is formed and conveyed;
• Analyse and interpret texts and to translate and critically evaluate them;
• Read with attention to detail and to edit texts according to specific language norms;
• Participate as responsible citizens in the life of local, national and global communities;
• Be self-conscious learners;
• Be culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of contexts;
• Develop entrepreneurial opportunities;
• Research a specific problem in Translation by reviewing the latest literature on it;
• Relate theory to research and formulate a research question;

• Present a project in an acceptable form in clear and coherent language.

Integrated Assessment

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

Learners will demonstrate their ability and proficiency in each of the learning outcomes. These are assessed in an integrated manner by assignments, tutorials, oral presentations and examinations. Also, the learner's integration of knowledge and skills will be assessed through the completion of an appropriate translation project (Postgraduate Diploma and Honours) or a research project and translation (for the MA: Translation Studies).
