Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

- Learners demonstrate skills and knowledge in chosen fields of the study of music and musicology, with focus towards African music and related topics.
- Learners demonstrate the ability to write a mini-dissertation or long essay on a topic of (African and related) music history.
- Learners can compose music, especially using African (and related) techniques.
- Learners can perform music, especially African (and related) music.
- Learners acquire knowledge about music technology and the skills to use it.

- By demonstrating their ability to read and study music and literature about music; by expressing themselves clearly in writing about music; by demonstrating skills in music sight reading; by being able to demonstrate music theory in writing and practically.
- By showing ability to design and produce a mini-dissertation or long essay.
- By producing a portfolio of compositions, including text, transcriptions and recordings.
- By practical performance, individual and in group performance.
- By demonstrating the ability to describe and to use electronic equipment; by demonstrating the ability to maintain and make (African) musical instruments.
