Purpose and rationale

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with

Practical Competence

The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability in the following skills and demonstrate an ability to make informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills; research skills; cognitive skills; designing and evaluating curricula with a Latin focus.

Foundational Competence

The learners should be able to demonstrate an understanding of analysis and interpretation of skills; language formulation and communication; analysis of texts.

Reflexive Competence

The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking; reflective thinking in the field of Latin language, culture and literature.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning

All potential learners who claim to have achieved the entrance level of this qualification through experience need to apply to the Accreditation Committee of the Faculty of Arts. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty's prescriptions and guidelines.

A potential learner who wants to be credited for prior learning and experience for a particular module(s), needs to apply in writing to the Departmental Chairperson of the Department, offering the module or modules. The learner needs to clearly state the titles of the module(s) they want to be credited for, as well as the basis on which he/she believes the accreditation should be granted.

The principles of RPL are subscribed to and will be implemented in a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not to the detriment of the potential learner and that his/her chances to succeed must be reasonable.

f) Recognition of status for this qualification.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Arts, NQF Level 7.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Reflect on texts and on the process of problem solving and identification in the field of Latin Studies with full understanding and knowledge of their chosen approach.
  2. Solve text critical problems, also in the form of research articles, based on relevant knowledge of theories.
  3. Work together with other postgraduate learners and lectures in Latin in order to promote research seminars.
  4. Do basic and medium research work based on knowledge of research methodology, including the fields of Latin linguistics, philology and culture. Reflect on the success of their own research and the research of others.
  5. Read Latin on an advanced level and to communicate their knowledge and science (using visual and technical methods where necessary)
  6. Demonstrate sound knowledge of specialised literature and have the skills to find and use such literature.
  7. Demonstrate sound sensitivity in the fields of Latin aesthetics.
  8. Learners' knowledge of Roman democracy (and its evolution) should be able to strengthen their responsibilities as citizens, allowing them to reflect on democratic values.
  9. Display their knowledge in the field of Latin language effectively and appropriately.

  1. Display a sound knowledge of handling text critical problems? Will he be able to analyse, translate and discuss such a text?
  2. Demonstrate an ability to solve problems and communicate with others effectively, in a written and/or oral manner, on the results of research and the knowledge of theories?
  3. Demonstrate acquisition of teamwork skills e.g. in the context of seminars?
  4. Have the skills to write (a) research article(s) in an appropriate way?
  5. Display a sound translation and communication technique?
  6. Reveal detailed knowledge of specialised literature?
  7. Display sound aesthetic sensitivity in the field of Latin studies?
  8. Have the knowledge and experience to become a better citizen?
  9. Display sound language skills in the field of ancient Latin?

Integrated Assessment

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented

Essays, seminars, translation exercises and presentations.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of four written examinations (of 3 hours each) and one research essay. Examinations will be written during the University's examination sessions (June, November, January).
