Purpose and rationale
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with
Practical Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability in the following skills, and to demonstrate informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills, research skills, cognitive skills, designing and evaluating curricula with a Greek focus.
Foundational Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of: analysis and interpretation of skills; language formulation and communication (oral and written in the case of Modern Greek); analysis of texts.
Reflexive Competence: The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking; reflective thinking in the field of Greek language, culture and literature.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Access to BA Hons (Greek) may be obtained by a learner who claims to have achieved the qualifications through experience. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty's prescriptions and guidelines.
Potential learners who want to be credited for prior learning and/or experience for a particular module or modules, need to apply in writing to the Departmental Chairperson of the department offering the module or modules the student wish to be credited for, clearly stating the title(s) of the module or modules they want to be credited for as well as the basis on which they believe the accreditation should be granted.
The principles of RPL are subscribed to and will be implemented in a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not be to the detriment of the potential student and that his/her chances to succeed must be reasonable.
The Committee will assess learners' competencies in order to determine whether they are eligible for a) access to, b) advanced placement in, or c) recognition of status for this qualification.
Entry requirements
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Bachelor of Arts in Theology, NQF Level 7.
Or
- Bachelor of Arts in Languages, NQF Level 7.
Or
- General Bachelors of Arts with Greek as major, NQF Level 7.

Exit level outcomes
- Solve text critical problems, also in the form of research articles, based on relating knowledge and theories. Reflect on their own ability in problem solving and identification in the field of Greek studies, with full understanding and knowledge of their chosen approach.
- Solve text problems and to work with other postgraduate leaners and lecturers in Greek, in order to promote research (seminars), based on relevant knowledge of theories.
- Do independent research, based on relevant research methodology, and reflect on the process of their own research and the research of other researchers.
- Do basic and medium research work, including research in the fields of Greek linguistics, phi logy and culture (history). Reflect on the success of their own research and the research of others.
- Communicate orally and in writing, at an advanced level (in the case of Modern Greek), and communicate their knowledge and science by using visual and technical methods, where necessary.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of specialised literature and have the skills to find and use literature.
- Demonstrate a sound sensitivity in the fields of Greek aesthetics.
- Learners' knowledge of Greek democracy (and its evolution) should be able to strengthen their responsibilities as citizens allowing them to reflect on democratic values.
- Improve employment skills in the field of languages, translation and (in the case of Ancient Greek) theology.
- Display their knowledge in the field of Greek language and culture effectively and appropriately.
Associated assessment criteria
The following Associated Assessment Criteria applies across the Exit Level Outcomes
- Display a sound knowledge of handling text critical problems.
- Communicate effectively with others, in a written and/or oral manner, on the results of research.
- Demonstrate an ability to do independent research, and does he/she reflect appropriately on the process of research.
- Have the skills to write (a) research article(s) in an appropriate way.
- Display a sound translation technique.
- Reveal a detailed knowledge of specialised literature.
- Display a sound aesthetic sensitivity in the field of Greek studies.
- Have knowledge and experience to become a better citizen.
- Display sound languages skills in the field of ancient/Christian and/or Modern Greek.
- Display his/her knowledge in the field of Greek language and culture effectively and appropriately.
Integrated Assessment
Formative assessment practices that will be implemented
Essays, seminars, translation exercises and presentations.
Summative assessment practices that will be implemented
Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of four written examinations, of 3 hours each, and one research essay. Examinations will be written during the Institution's exam session (June, November, and January).

NOTES
This BA Honours with endorsement qualification is registered as a separate qualification only with SAQA. At the Department of Education it is not registered separately, but is included in the registration of the generic BA Honours.
