Purpose and rationale

French is an academic and broadly vocational discipline, which aims to equip learners to communicate effectively in French in a professional context. Learners are provided with the skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing in French as well as with an understanding of the socio-cultural realities of French-speaking countries. Learners are also provided with the skills required to analyse and synthesise information in French. Such education is crucial in the context of globalisation in this continent where French is widely spoken. This qualification offers learners a particular vocational path and equips them to become active players in the fields of diplomacy, tourism, business, education and development.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

  3. Understand the aesthetic, affective, cultural and social values of French-speaking societies and contrast this with his/her society;
  4. Demonstrate advanced intellectual abilities such as analysis and synthesis of information in French;
  5. Show critical awareness of language use;
  6. Understand the importance of multilingualism and knowledge of French for the economic and social development of the continent;
  7. Self-directed study;
  8. Summarise and evaluate a substantial body of knowledge;
  9. Communicate in French, at an advanced level as well as in professional contexts;
  10. Engage at an advanced level with the concepts, philosophies and concerns related to socio-cultural realities;
  11. Understand and critically comment on literary text in French;

Integrated assessment is appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.
