Purpose and rationale

To develop at postgraduate level the reading, writing, thinking and analytical skills of learners. Critical, interpretative and evaluative abilities of learners will also be developed, within the context of more specialised and more intensive courses than were offered at undergraduate level.

Entry requirements and RPL

Learners are expected to have a level 5 and 6 (first degree) qualification, with a major in Afrikaans. Learners who have obtained a mark of less than 60% in this major will not usually be admitted to Afrikaans Honours.

Exit level outcomes

On completion of the qualification learners will be expected to have

  1. Highly developed communicative competence in Afrikaans.
  2. Highly developed analytic, interpretative and evaluative abilities.
  3. A developed sense of scholarship in the field and of themselves as positioned in relation to other scholars.

4.The beginning of a sense of independent intellectual endeavour.

Associated assessment criteria

Integrated assessment

A broad spectrum approach to assessment will be followed, which will result in the compilation of an Honours portfolio. Oral prensentations and more extended written work, as well as more extended research will also be encouraged. Use will be made of external examiners.

Articulation options

A pass of 60% or more will enable learners to study further at Afrikaans Masters level.
