Purpose and rationale

The qualification aims to

  • Secure employment and enhance their career opportunities by supplementing their undergraduate qualifications with a qualification that provides broad exposure to management principles and practices at the postgraduate level. In particular, women graduates who have chosen their undergraduate major, based on traditional 'female career' options can make the transition at the graduate level to a field historically dominated by men.
  • Enhance opportunities for promotion into managerial positions by completing the programme on a full-or part-time basis. This qualification will be of particular value to black women in these positions as they are often overlooked for career development opportunities if they do not have formal qualifications in management.
  • Provide access to experienced managers who do not have a formal university qualification, but have the potential to complete graduate-level studies (with ten years of work experience with some at a managerial or supervisory level).

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Advanced Certificate in Management, NQF Level 6.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Demonstrate general knowledge in the field of management with the opportunity to acquire a greater breadth of knowledge of cognate functional areas of depth in a chosen area of specialisation, e.g. Marketing, Finance or Human Resource Management.
  2. Identify and solve management problems using some judgement across a range of functional areas.
  3. Organise oneself and work effectively with others as a team tackling business research projects, case studies and assignments.
  4. Able to collect, analyse, organise theoretical and practical information across a range of functional areas of management and critically evaluate information if an area of specialisation is selected.
  5. Communicate effectively using OHPs and language skills in oral and written presentation.
  6. Use basic desktop computer tools effectively to solve management problems.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the organisation as a set of related functions by applying holistic approaches to strategic business problems.

Associated assessment criteria

The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes

  1. A greater breadth of knowledge in the field of management is demonstrated in projects and programmes produced.
  2. Identify and solve management problems and with judgements across a range of functional areas.
  3. Reflect team work business research projects, case studies and assignments in an effective and organised way.
  4. Collect, analyse and critically evaluate theoretical and practical information across a range of functional areas of management is collected, analysed, organised and critically in the form of reports and projects.
  5. Demonstrate language skills in the oral and written presentation as effective communication skills and the ability to use OHPs.
  6. Use basic desktop computer tools to solve management problems effectively.
  7. Use holistic approaches to solve strategic business problems.

Integrated Assessment

All modules in the Department will be evaluated on a continuous assessment basis.

Formative

The formative assessment consists of various kinds of assignments, presentations, research essays provided for feedback and mentoring.

This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

Horizontal Articulation

  • Bachelor of Public Management, NQF Level 7.
  • Advanced Diploma in School Leadership and Management, NQF Level 7.

Vertical Articulation

  • Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management, NQF Level 8.
