Diploma in Multimedia

Purpose

The purpose of the Diploma in Multimedia Design is to provide general multimedia design principles, knowledge and skills for students to prepare them for entry into the digital media industry as multimedia. designers. The Diploma will provide students with General Multimedia design principles, knowledge and skills, including, Illustration, Digital Photography, Digital Video, Animation, Interface Design, to prepare them for entry into the Digital Media industry as multimedia designers.

Rationale

The purpose of this Diploma in Multimedia is to prepare the student for a career in Multi-Media in a creative role and equip them with a sound basis for progression to a higher educational or vocational level as well as equipping them with skills required in the field. The technological advancements over the past decade has created a new breed of visual communicators and a need for multimedia specialist who understands the changes and embraced the opening up of communication into a global network. Graphic or visual communication, as a marketing tool, also inspired research, investigation and analysis of problems to come up with ground breaking and effective solutions to clearly communicate with the market.

Students are encouraged to prepare a portfolio that not only reflects their personal ambitions and career objectives, but displays competence in all "core skills" areas and shows the ability to use a variety of research techniques in their approach to a design solution. The Diploma will allow students to consolidate and supplement knowledge gained on previous levels so as to produce appropriate multimedia with a relevant conceptual and technical content. Design and film industries offer internships to graduate students, who are skilled in Digital Multimedia Design and are employable immediately in the advertising, design and film industries. Students will have career's in Interaction Designer, User experience Designer, Interface Designer, Web Designer, Design Researcher, Video Editor, Post Production Designer, Animator, Motion Graphics Designer, Designer, Writer, Entrepreneur, Animator, Motion graphics Designer, Design thinking.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an integral part of education and academic practice. It is acknowledged that all learning has value and the UJ will endeavour to assess prior learning and award credit where relevant.

Prospective students may apply for RPL by following the UJ procedures. There are no differences in the RPL processes and procedures (as per policy) between the distance education mode and the existing accredited qualifications that the institution offers.

The following principles are relevant

• Through RPL a student may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that he/she continues his/her studies at the UJ.
• Recognition takes place in terms of requirements and procedures applied by the Faculty RPL in the case of a student not complying with the formal entry requirements is conducted after payment of the prescribed fees in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University:

> Is based on other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.

> Is considered only where prior learning corresponds to the required NQF-level.

> Takes place where prior learning in terms of applied competencies is relevant to the content and outcomes of the programme.

> Is considered in terms of an assessment procedure that includes a motivated recommendation by an assessment panel to the Dean's Committee.

> Is finally decided upon by the Dean's Committee.

• Where an applicant's academic qualification does not satisfy the formal entrance requirements, the applicant may apply for admission through RPL, which application may be granted subject to such conditions as may be considered to be appropriate.

Entry Requirements

Admission requirements

• A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum APS-score of 20 with Mathematics or 21 with Mathematical Literacy and who fulfil the minimum rules of access, as stated in AD1: General Faculty Regulations.

Selection criteria

• Selection is based on an entrance assessment, consisting of the submission of a prescribed portfolio (see Faculty Information Brochure www.uj.ac.za/fada).

1. Produce a range of digital animation, interactive and video outputs that conform to contemporary, professional and technical standards.
2. Apply self-motivated, creative, problem- solving skills within the formal and informal sectors.
3. Display a critical understanding of the relationship between contemporary socio- political/cultural forces and the self- motivated, creative production of multimedia products in a professional context.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1

• Apply general multimedia design principles and knowledge to work as a multimedia designer in the digital media industry.
• Application of clear non-verbal communication in terms of client and target market communication.
• Develop concepts and their approach to the varied options to the solution of the design problem.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2

• Demonstrate a focused knowledge and skills of multimedia design methods, processes, technologies and techniques competently to create and present professional multimedia design solutions.
• Analyse design products and their feasibility and their analyse the scope of work required.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3

• Enable them to demonstrate knowledge of multimedia design theory and practice.
• Demonstrate the application of multimedia design in a simulated workplace context.

Intergrated Assessment

Continuous assessment in all modules.

Formative Assessment

• Internal panel evaluation of studio work, projects and/or products.

Summative Assessment

• Completed within fourteen days of projects being handed in.
• At least 6 summative assessments per module.
• Examinations.
• Internal moderation of at least 30% of assessments.
• External assessment at exit level.
