Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The Diploma in Management is intended for learners who can function at all managerial levels in any organisation. The qualifying learner will be competent in formulating, interpreting and implementing corporate strategies and problem-solving and decision making in managerial situations. The learner will be working in Government (national departments, provincial departments and local authorities); private and parastatal organisations; research organisations and tertiary education institutions. The qualifying learner will be competent in applying selected management principles and techniques in supporting and implementing strategies, policies and procedures.

Rationale

The South African economy is characterised by a high level of unemployment and severe shortages of certain skills which are demanded in the economy. Critical shortages exist mostly in the management sector ranging from managers and professionals. Hence, the rationale for the qualification is to strive to instil managerial and project management skills in our graduates to support their academic talents. Therefore, compulsory management exposure will be presented via successful local business people and other entrepreneurial experts through Work Integrated Learning. However, learners and staff are encouraged to become members of the various professional and institutional bodies. After 1994 South African employees were rated as number last compared with other countries. In response to that, this qualification enables learners to enter into labour market as it provides learners with basic knowledge, skills and competencies to perform the job. Since South Africa is a diverse country, management skills are needed as to manage people in organisations, due to this ongoing transformation process, competent managers are needed to manage people by implementing the skills that they have learned. A qualified learner will be able to work in both public and private sector as project managers, general managers, administrators and financial experts.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Institution has an RPL policy in place that allows learners access to higher education by recognising their prior learning (short courses and work experience). RPL applications for the institution are received by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CLTD). The learners are required to complete an RPL application document. Accompanying the RPL application must be certified copies of all previous qualifications and a comprehensive portfolio reflecting on extensive work learning. Once the institution's RPL coordinator has deemed the RPL application as being complete, the portfolio will be sent to the relevant Academic Department for assessment. The department's RPL committee will assess the learner's portfolio thoroughly against the relevant learning outcomes. The learners will have to demonstrate competence in the applicable Exit Level Outcomes. Successful learners will then be accepted into the qualification. Learners applying for RPL will be required to provide evidence of competence by means of portfolios and r challenge assessments as per targeted learning outcomes. This is in keeping with the Institution RPL policy, the institution Senate rules and the departmental rules.
