Purpose and rationale

Purpose

To teach and develop a learner to apply and demonstrate professional skills in the following areas

  • Performance, Arranging/Composition, and Music Technology.
  • To develop learners' creativity, entrepreneurial and intellectual skills in compliance with the standards and need of the music industry.

Entry requirements and RPL

Access to the Qualifications

  • School-Leaving Certificate with Matriculation Exemption.
  • School-Leaving Certificate without Matriculation Exemption or Mature Age Exemption, on the basis of recognition of prior learning for alternative access, approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Dean.
  • Foundation Certificate in Music.
  • Experience in school, profession or semi-professional ensembles and/or community choirs; some knowledge of staff notation; ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning for alternative access will be granted to applicants who, on the basis of an audition, diagnostic tests in aural perception and music theory, and an English proficiency test, demonstrate prior learning as follows:

  • A degree of practical mastery, such as would permit entrance to First Practical Study.
  • A reasonably discriminating aural perceptivity and a familiarity with theoretical rudiments, such as would permit entrance to Music Theory and Perception 1or Introduction to Music Fundamentals.
  • A proficiency in English, such as would permit entrance to ALE or ELC.

Applicants who do not demonstrate adequate prior knowledge in music practice and theory will be encouraged to register for the Foundation Certificate in Music.

Qualification rules

Minimum credits required at specific levels or maximum credits where these exceed the minima specified in regulation 8 and/or 9:

  • 128 Credits at NQF Level 5.
  • 128 Credits at NQF Level 6.
  • 128 Credits at NQF Level 7 (NAP Levels).

Exit level outcomes

On completion of the Diploma, diplomats should be able to

  • Demonstrate intermediate proficiency on a chosen instrument or voice (Solo and Ensemble).
  • Demonstrate the ability to read music at an intermediate level.
  • Show knowledge of the principles of harmony, arranging, composition and music technology.

Integrated Assessment

Formative: Assessment of learner's progress in theoretical and practical modules by means of projects, tests and musical performance.

Summative: Evaluation of learner by means of final examination, project or musical performance.

Articulation options

Vertical articulation: Bachelor of Jazz and Popular Music

  • Subject to general Faculty and University regulations, the programme articulates easily with other programmes in the Faculty. The first year of study is intended to allow suitably qualified learners to move into either a BMus (Performance) programme or a BA or BA (Music) programme.
  • Most modules will be available as options for students registered in other programmes, e.g. existing diplomas, BA, BA (Music), BMus.
  • Students who have completed work at other institutions or who have prior experiential learning can enter the programme at various levels, the auditions and other entry tests allowing the teachers of the programme to perform equivalence assessments.
