Purpose and rationale
This qualification includes the various specialisations in Sports Science. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop deep progressive knowledge and advanced competencies at the first post-graduate Level in Movement and Sport Science, in preparation for employment in both the public and private (formal and informal) sectors in the areas of sports science, coaching science and sports management, with emphasis on rural sport development. In addition, learners will develop discipline-related critical and analytical problem-solving skills necessary for both applied and academic research. This qualification will provide South African sport with appropriately qualified professionals for employment in this growing field.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Sports Science, NQF Level 7.
- Bachelor of Arts in Sport Recreation and Exercise Science, NQF Level 7.

A minimum of 128 credits must be completed for this one year qualification.
Exit level outcomes
By the end of the qualification, the learners should be able to
- Communicate effectively with peers, in a variety of modes, in the discourse of Movement and Sport Science.
- Demonstrate responsible and effective time management and organization of projects and research, meeting personal objectives and negotiated deadlines.
- To interact with increasing self-confidence, as a member of a team or group in a variety of discussion and problem-solving situations.
- Exhibit a detailed knowledge and understanding of human movement and sport science, and be able to identify and solve problems in these areas through critical and creative thinking.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently in developing a deeper understanding of specified areas of the subject.
- Develop applied competencies in the use of science and technology in relation to sport-specific disciplines.
- Manage data and information effectively, through the collection, storage, analysis, synthesis, presentation and critical evaluation, using a variety of analytical methods and techniques.
- Exhibit the necessary skills to successfully carry out a research project of limited scope.
Associated assessment criteria
Integrated Assessment
Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of all components of the qualification and are assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments and formal examinations, in written and oral form. There is a short supervised research project which is assessed orally in presentations and as a written report. Integrated assessment is carried out in written examinations and a short research project.
