Bachelor of Social Science in Government, Business and Ethics

Purpose and rationale

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with a generalized understanding of principles and theories, which inform the broad fields of government and business while also grounding them meaningfully on the nature and implications of ethical considerations in both areas. Also, the qualification will enable learners to develop their practical skills in a way that prepares them for postgraduate studies or careers in business or government.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 with endorsement.

Or

  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's studies.

Or

  • National Certificate Vocational, NQF Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's studies.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Understand fundamental issues and principles, which inform the fields of government and business.
  2. Organise and reflect critically on issues and assumptions related to both fields.
  3. Engage in a collaborative project on research and management simulations.
  4. Develop a good understanding of societal norms, values and the ethical issues and challenges facing officials in government and business.

  • Demonstrate a variety of educational and career opportunities.
  • Demonstrate a desire to develop or pursue entrepreneurial objectives.
  • Demonstrate the nature, responsibilities and values of good citizenship.
  • Demonstrate a keen and nuanced awareness and appreciation of the societal norms, values, and varied cultures that shape their domestic and global worlds.
  • Demonstrate the importance of intellectual probity, critical thinking and analysis, and the development and employment of innovative research and learning techniques.

Integrated Assessment

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

The institution is currently informing its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

  • This qualification will encourage the use of complex assessment methods in all modules with the view of developing and identifying critical cognitive skills.
  • This qualification will seek to integrate within each module skill development mechanisms such as individual presentations, group-based activities and applied simulations of real-life experiences.
  • This qualification will develop written and oral examination at each exit point.
  • This qualification will also work towards developing a capstone module for the third year exit point with an eye on integrating and assessing the central tenets of qualification learning outcomes.
