Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Government, Business and Ethics

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with a generalized understanding of principles and theories, which inform the broad fields of government and business while also grounding them meaningfully on the nature and implications of ethical considerations in both areas. Also the qualification will enable learners to develop their practical skills in a way that prepares them for post-graduates studies or careers in business or government.

Purpose and rationale

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with a generalized understanding of principles and theories, which inform the broad fields of government and business while also grounding them meaningfully on the nature and implications of ethical considerations in both areas. Also the qualification will enable learners to develop their practical skills in a way that prepares them for post-graduates studies or careers in business or government.

Entry requirements and RPL

A recognised school leaving certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent with at least 28 points based on a Matriculation examination, or else entry at the discretion of the Dean.

Proficiency in academic English as determined by a general test given by Faculty of Human Sciences

Learners who register for the course should be able to

  • Understand fundamental issues and principles, which inform the fields of government and business.
  • Organize and reflect critically on issues and assumptions related to both fields.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

This Programme will encourage the use of complex assessment methods in all modules with the view of developing and identifying critical cognitive skills.

This Programme will seek to integrate within each module skill development mechanisms such as individual presentations, group-based activities, and applied simulations of real life experiences

This Programme will develop written and oral examination at each exit point

This Programme will also work towards developing a capstone module for the third year exit point with an eye on integrating and assessing the central tenets of qualification learning outcomes

  • Formal exit points are after 2nd and 3rd years
  • Very high flexibility and portability
  • Entry points are at 1st and 2nd years of study
  • Modules in International Studies, Bcom, BA, BsocSci etc.
  • Range of modules would allow exceptional students to take more than the normal load during the regular semester.
