Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Computer Science

Purpose and rationale

It will prepare broadly based graduate capable of developing the fundamentals of computer programming, and with the expertise to analyse, design, operate and manage computer systems, contributing to the country's need for an increase in manpower and self sufficiency in the computer science industry. Entry requirements and RPL

  • An adequate level of development of knowledge and skills in mathematics.
  • Adequate literacy skills in English. These can be demonstrated in a number of ways.

o Matriculation exemption with at least 40% Higher Grade or at least 60 % at Standard grade for Mathematics

o Alternative access programmes such as the Science Foundation Programme

  • The SFP provides access to students who do net have a formal or adequate matric exemption.

Recognised prior learning

Students who have completed a diploma at a College or Technikon may be admitted, provided they meet the criteria above.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

In the research project (either CSCI140) the student will be expected to demonstrate an overall understanding of the programme and a capability to integrate the materials learned in the program. The student will be assessed by means of seminars which they must present to an external assessor, a written project report and the quality of the artifact produced (usually an IT application).
