Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Sport Recreation and Exercise Science is to have a generic qualification that includes all the aspects of sport and exercise science in the first two years of the undergraduate degree. In the third and final year, learners will be required to make a well-informed and educated decision whether they would like to follow the postgraduate stream in Biokinetics or in Exercise Science. Qualifying learners will be able to:

  • Explain, demonstrate and lead effective sport, recreation and exercise sessions.
  • Explain, demonstrate and coach the basic skills of sport.
  • Evaluate basic skills of sport.
  • Explain and apply the rules of sport and recreational activities.

Rationale

Sport and the associated industries of leisure, recreation, and fitness have entered a period of rapid growth. Recent skills audits conducted by the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA), have highlighted the need for capacity building in sport to promote competence in managing sport organisations, tournaments and events, sport teams and sport facilities. South Africa is being given more opportunities to host sport events at a national and international level. This qualification provides professionals who can work at the level of competence required for international sport events. Sports marketing with sport sponsorships represent a multimillion rand industry and the current range of TV channels dedicated to sport is evident of publics' interest and demand for sporting activities.

The qualification prepares its qualifying learners for work in various sectors of the sport world.

These sectors include the following

  • NGO (Non-Government Organisation).
  • Public (National, Provincial, District, Regional, Local and agencies).
  • Entrepreneurial (Manufacturing, Tourism, Sport skills, sport goods, Management organisation and information technology).
  • Services (sport medicine, talent development, wellness, consulting, coaching, PR and communication, marketing and events).
  • Fitness (Trainers, health promotion and physical activities).
  • Administrative (clubs, facilities, federations and teams).
  • Education (school, academies and tertiary).

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Access to the qualification can also be provided in terms of the institution's RPL policy and its admission criteria stipulated by Senate. In the RPL process, learners have to undergo a Portfolio Development Course (PDC) to support the learner's admission. The PDC will focus on written submission explaining the reasons for the learner' interest in in the discipline as an adjunct to their existing professional competencies.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's studies.

  • Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 with endorsement.

Exit level outcomes

  3. Conduct effective exercise programmes for special populations, i.e., chronically diseased, physically challenged and elderly.

Associated assessment criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria applies across all the Exit Level Outcome

  • Demonstrate competencies in physical fitness testing,
  • Design and implement exercise programmes,
  • Organise and operate fitness facilities and resources,
  • Demonstrate leadership and competencies in training and supervision of exercise personnel,
  • Valuate exercise programmes,
  • Develop appropriate exercise programmes to address specific population needs.

Integrated Assessment

The institution implements a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consists of number assessment events throughout the year and a variety of assessment instruments are used (for example, tests, essays, practical reports, project reports and oral presentations).

Formative assessment

Learning and assessment are integrated and a variety of modules is included in the qualification; therefore, different types of formative assessment will be applied according to the nature of each module. Assessment during the year will consist of a combination of assignments including activities such as, portfolios, self-assessment tasks.

Summative assessment

Examinations, or equivalent assessment such as a portfolio of evidence, assess a representative selection of the outcomes practised and assessed in the formative stage. Summative assessment also tests the learner's ability to manage and integrate a large body of knowledge to achieve the stated outcomes of the module.
